A STUDY OF GRAIN BOUNDARY TRANSLATIONAL STATES IN A s3[i l0] /( iT1) BICRYSTAL

-High-resolution electron microscopy images of a 27311"10]/(II1) bicrystal produced by heavy cold rolling and annealing show a multiplicity of grain boundary core structures. Two grain boundary states are separated by a partial grain boundary dislocation with Burgers vector b = 1/2 b~ (where b I = 1/6[112] is the Burgers vector of a secondary dislocation). This implies a change in translational state. All other structures are related through continuous transport of atoms from one grain to the other resulting in [IIl] grain boundary steps. Calculations of the energy associated with the observed structures indicate that the two perfect twin states t = 0 and 2bt are stable, while all other grain boundary translational states are metastable. Deux 6tats de joints de grains sont srparrs par une dislocation imparfaite de joints de grains, de vecteur de Burgers b = 1-2b I (off b I = I/6 [112] est le vecteur de Burgers d'une dislocation secondaire). Ceci implique un changement de l'&at de translation. Toutes les autres structures sont relires par un transport continu d'atomes d'un grain vers rautre, ce qui donne des marches de joints de grains [T~ 1]. Des calculs de l'rnergie associre aux structures observres indiquent que les deux 6tats de macle parfaite t = 0 et 2b t sont stables, tandis que tousles autres 6tats de translation des joints de grains sont mrtastables. Zusammenfassuag--Hochaufgelrste elektronenmikroskopische Durchstrahlungsbilder eines X =31110/ (11 l)-Bikristalles, hergestellt durch starkes Walzen und Ausheilen, weisen auf eine Anzahl von korngrenzstrukturen hin. Zwei verschiedene Korngrenzzust/inde werden voneinander getrennt durch eine TeilKorngrenzversetzung mit Burgersvektor b = 1/2 bt (wobei b I = 1/61112] der Burgersvektor einer sekund/iren Versetzung ist). Das bedeutet ein Wechsel im Translationszustand. Alle anderen Strukturen h~ingen fiber kontinuierlichen Transport von Atomen yon einem Korn zum anderen, welches zu [111]-Korngrenzstufen f/ihrt, zusammen. Berechnungen der mit den beobachteten Strukturen verbundenen Energien zeigen, dab zwei perfekte Zwillingszust~inde t = 0 und 2bt stabil sind, wohingegen alle anderen Zust/inde metastabil sind.
